Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (also known as Sherlock Holmes 2) is directed by Guy Ritchie and produced by Joel Silver, Lionel Wigram, Susan Downey and Dan Lin. It is a sequel to the 2009 film Sherlock Holmes based on the character of the same name created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The screenplay is by Kieran Mulroney and Michele Mulroney. Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law reprise their roles as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, respectively, as the duo join forces to outwit and bring down their most cunning adversary, Professor Moriarty.

Sherlock Holmes has always been the smartest man in the room... until now. There is a new criminal mastermind at large—Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris) and not only is he Holmes' intellectual equal, but his capacity for evil, coupled with a complete lack of conscience, may actually give him an advantage over the renowned detective.

When the Crown Prince of Austria is found dead, the evidence, as construed by Inspector Lestrade (Eddie Marsan), points to suicide. But Sherlock Holmes deduces that the prince has been the victim of murder a murder that is only one piece of a larger and much more portentous puzzle, designed by one Professor Moriarty.

Mixing business with pleasure, Holmes tracks the clues to an underground gentlemen's club, where he and his brother, Mycroft Holmes (Stephen Fry) are toasting Dr. Watson on his last night of bachelorhood. It is there that Holmes encounters Sim (Noomi Rapace), a Gypsy fortune teller, who sees more than she is telling and whose unwitting involvement in the prince's murder makes her the killer's next target. Holmes barely manages to save her life and, in return, she reluctantly agrees to help him.

The investigation becomes ever more dangerous as it leads Holmes, Watson and Sim across the continent, from England to France to Germany and finally to Switzerland. But the cunning Moriarty is always one step ahead as he spins a web of death and destruction all part of a greater plan that, if he succeeds, will change the course of history.

Trent Bridge: India finish Day 1 at 24 for 1

Trent Bridge (Nottingham): Indian pacers made strong statement on Day 1 of the second Test at Trent Bridge blowing away England top order in no time but a spirited fight back lead by Stuart Broad helped England put up a respectable total of 221 in their first innings.

Ishant Sharma, Praveen Kumar and S Sreesnath finished with three wickets a piece.

India closed the end of Day 1 with 24 runs for the loss of one wicket.

Abhinav Mukund got out for a first ball duck as Rahul Dravid (7*) and VVS Laxman (13*) held the fort for the Indians.

Earlier in the day, India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss on a gloomy Nottingham morning and elected to bowl in the second Test of the npower series at Trent Bridge.

With S Sreesanth in for Zaheer Khan and Yuvraj Singh in for Gautam Gambhir, India needed to utilize the conditions early on.

And as India would have expected, the morning session did belong to the visitors with S Sreesanth leading from the front at lunch.

Ishant Sharma was bowling in rhythm pitching the ball short at uncomfortable height whereas Praveen Kumar relied heavily on his banana swing to trouble the batsmen.

Ishant first took out Alastair Cook (2) leg before wicket as Sreesanth struck in his very first over to send the solid Jonathan Trott back to the pavilion for just 4 runs.

Kevin Pieteren looked ominous for a brief period, playing with authority as Sreesanth in his usual sense started to bowl waywardly. KP along with Struass who slugged it out in the middle had a little partnership going.

But unlike Lord’s, the Indian bowlers were able to put a break on the partnership. Comeback man Sreesanth took his revenge of being hit for two consecutive boundaries scalping the prized wicket KP.

Throughout the morning session, the swing was very much evident and it was well exploited by both Praveen and Sreesanth.

Ishant on the other hand admirably stuck to his task of hitting the deck hard, giving no room for the batsmen to work around thus keeping on the pressure.

After lunch, as Sree picked up KP, Praveen joined in with the wickets of Strauss and Eion Morgan. Both dismissals were classic swing bowlers’ wicket. Strauss poked into an out-swinging delivery only to edge it to Raina at third slip.

Two balls later, Kumar produced a gem of a delivery against Morgan which came back in just enough to convince Asad Rauf to raise his finger for LBW.

England seemed to fall apart at this moment as the pacers continued to make merry. Sreesanth came back to square up Matt Prior giving catching practice for Dravid at first slip, then Sharma finished off a little resistance of Bell.

When it looked like india would wrap up the England innings before tea, Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann combined to put up a fight till tea.

But the fight turned into fight back a bit later and in no time counter attacking from both the gritty players took India by surprise.

In between all this, Harbhajan squeezed in three odd over only to be plundered around the park.

Broad and Swann clearly stuck it out and with most of the steam gone out of the pacers by tea, Harbhajan should have taken up the role of clearing out the tail but instead he became the victim of a ‘tailwind’ propelled by Swann and Broad.

Broad launched an all-out attack on India trying to clear the in-field on every occasion and he did that rather successfully.

PK did take the wicket of Swann but last man James Anderson hung around enough for Broad to get his fifty and in the process clear the 200-run mark for England as well.

The last two wickets of England totalled 97 runs whereas the first eight could only muster 124.

The Trent Bridge Test on Day 1 displayed the same character of Indian team which had helped them reach the numero uno status in Test whereas England showcased the fighting spirit that could take them all the way to the top of the tree in Tests.

A long Day 2 awaits the duo of Dravid and Laxman as the English bowling lead by Anderson and Broad would be looking to ruffle up some early feathers at Nottingham.

Tottenham Playmaker Luka Modric To Demand Chelsea Move In Next 48 Hours

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Luka Modric will tell chairman Daniel Levy in the next 48 hours he still wants to move to Chelsea this summer.

The 25-year-old has been the subject of two bids from the Blues this summer but Spurs are adamant he is not for sale.

The Croatia international has five-years left on his contract and has attracted interest from Manchester United and Manchester City also.

Levy has claimed Modric will not leave “at any price” but the club have so far refused to say whether they will offer the player a pay rise to reflect their valuation of him.

Manager Harry Redknapp is desperate to keep hold of the playmaker as he bids to regain a place in the Champions League, according to The Times.

The Spurs boss labelled Chelsea’s original £22million as ‘ridiculous’ and stands by his chairman in refusing to sell one of his best assets.

helsea are expected to increase their offer in the coming weeks as they search for a playmaker to play behind Fernando Torres.

The Blues owner, Roman Abramovich, has been talking to Modric’s agent on his yacht in Dubrovnik.

Guus Hiddink in warning to Andre Villas-Boas

GUUS HIDDINK has warned Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas not to lose the respect of John Terry and Frank Lampard.

The former Blues chief admits Villas-Boas' relationship with the club's two key senior players is of paramount importance.

And Hiddink, in charge at Stamford Bridge two years ago, revealed Lamps and JT play the role of enforcers when it comes to discipline in the squad.

Hiddink, now Turkey manager, was George Best's room-mate as a player in America when he was the same age as Villas-Boas.

Asked whether Chelsea's ex-Porto boss will be able to enjoy a good relationship with his players at 33, Hiddink said: "It depends on the quality of the manager and also his human qualities.

"Age does not have to mean the players consider him as a brother. If they feel he is straightforward and has good integrity he will be fine.

"He has to win respect. But it does not always have to do with age. On top of that, English professional players like Terry and Lampard know what is demanded in England. They take the lead.

"At big clubs, some leading players - like JT and Lampard - have a kind of respect for the club as well.

"They know the standards and what is required at Chelsea.

"The Chelsea squad have been together a long time, with new additions coming in. They have their own pride as a group and Villas-Boas can manage them.

"It is a very young age to be at Chelsea but he has proved at Porto that he is good. The Premier League is different but young people must be given a chance.

"I started young - but not that young. I was responsible for PSV Eindhoven when I was 41. When I was 33, I was an over-the-hill player. I was playing with George Best at San Jose. He was my room-mate.

"When you are playing at that age, you think you are still managing but young players are running around you, kicking and elbowing you.

"That is the sign to say stop playing, you are getting old." Skipper Terry, 30, insists he wants to be Chelsea's next manager after Villas-Boas.

But Hiddink, 64, who won the FA Cup as Blues caretaker, warned: "Sometimes people underestimate managing a group of players.

"They are part of the group and then being the leader is different. If they are wise they get an experienced manager on board while doing their courses.

"If they can cope with that change in a different world where they are no longer the star player, they can make that transformation. But he has to be intelligent."

Rio de Janeiro's Maracana to host 2014 World Cup final

FIFA have confirmed that Rio de Janeiro's Maracana will host the 2014 World Cup final. FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke confirmed.

The arena hosted the final of the 1950 tournament, when 200,000 people watched Brazil suffer a shock loss to Uruguay.

The current capacity is around 82,000 and FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke has announced it will again stage the showpiece in three years' time.

"The final is already certain, even though we think that lots of other cities could have hosted this match," said Valcke.

Atlantis Returns To Earth, NASA bids farewell to shuttle era

"Mission complete, Houston," Ferguson radioed. "After serving the world for over 30 years, the space shuttle has earned its place in history. It's come to a final stop."

The four STS-135 astronauts and their family members who came to NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida for yesterday's landing and completion of the Space Shuttle Program's final mission returned home to Houston this afternoon. The public is invited to attend a welcome home ceremony at 4 p.m. CDT in NASA's Hangar 990 at Ellington Field. Gates to Ellington Field will open at 3:30 p.m. The ceremony will be broadcast live on NASA TV and online at www.nasa.gov/ntv.

Space shuttle Atlantis was towed into Kennedy's Orbiter Processing Facility-2 following yesterday's employee appreciation event. Technicians will spend the next few weeks reconfiguring Atlantis after its final flight. Today, they will finish readying the shuttle and its hangar for the normal post-flight processing and begin draining residual cryogenic reactants. They'll continue deservicing work through the weekend.

The space shuttle program began on April 12, 1981 with the first launch of the space shuttle Columbia. Since then, 135 shuttle missions have been flown, using five space shuttles, and carrying 355 different people into space. The decision to end the space shuttle program was made so that NASA can focus on other goals, like sending a unmanned mission to an asteroid by 2016 and a manned mission to Mars for perhaps 2025.

The cancellation of the space shuttle program is part of President Obama’s space exploration proposal. However, there are currently no new vehicles capable of meeting the President’s long term goals. Additionally, any new program will surpasses the reach of what may or may not be President Obama’s second term. Any new President taking office could have completely different goals for space exploration and could take things in a different direction. This uncertainty has led many to lament the loss of the American space shuttle fleet.

Now that the space shuttles are all retired, NASA will be relying on Russia’s Soyuz spacecraft to carry astronauts to and from the International Space Station. However, commercial space flight is a growing business that may offer an alternative way to get people into space before NASA develops any new vehicles.

The Final Four :
Ferguson, Hurley, Sandra Magnus and flight engineer Rex Walheim doffed their 70-pound pressure suits and joined dozens of NASA managers, engineers and contractors, many awaiting layoffs, for a traditional runway inspection, smiling and sharing hugs and handshakes as they celebrated a safe homecoming.

Google+ to introduce social game platform

Striking Back Google: Google+ Games

The giant of web searches is going seriously on Social Networking. This time the people from Google have revealed something that I saw coming since I heard about Google+: Social Games. Thanks to Florian Rohrweck (Google Enthusiast), we all are now waiting on the release of the invites to test the new features of Google+.

Google still needs to tune up some details on their product to really make some impact to Facebook. The problem is that Google have two very well related problems: Loyalty and Dependency to Facebook by many users. These two obstacles are the most important to overcome in order to make an alternative Social Network.

Google+ is aiming the right target when selecting the games as one of the first moves. Social gaming is something so addictive that got people in Facebook when they were not even interested on it. Even if Google+ Games is a really good move, it won’t cause too much damage to Facebook.

Google+ gets 20 million users in 3 weeks

Here is a graph done analyzing the growth of Google+. It took only 24 days for Google+ to reach 20 million users, while it took over three years to reach that number for Facebook and Twitter. Considering that the service is still open only by invitation and that brands or news organisations are not yet invited, this sounds like a huge achievement.
I think that this success is partially due to the fact that society is now used to the concept of a 'social network', we know what to do with the facebooks, the twitters and similar things. Another reason for this fast achievement maybe that Google already has lots of active profiles, via Gmail and Android. Or maybe, it's because Google+ by just brand name.

Google remains some way behind its social networking rivals.Twitter has more than 300 million users and Facebook announced two weeks ago that it has 750 million.

Apple OS X 10.7 codename Lion

After 22 months of development, Apple has finally released the next major version of Mac OS X: 10.7 codename “Lion”. Apple's Mac OS X 10.7, aka Lion, is now available to download, as predicted; it's $30, or $70, or even free for some users.

Mac OS X 10.7 was first shown to the public in October 2010. The presentation was understated, especially compared to the bold rhetoric that accompanied the launches of the iPhone ("Apple reinvents the phone") and the iPad ("a magical and revolutionary device at an unbelievable price"). Instead, Steve Jobs simply called the new operating system "a sneak peek at where we're going with Mac OS X."

Apple had good reason to shy away from presenting Lion as the pinnacle that its name implies. The last two major releases of Mac OS X were both profoundly shaped by the meteoric rise of their younger sibling, iOS. Leopard arrived later than expected, and in the same year that the iPhone was introduced. Its successor, Snow Leopard, famously arrived with no new features, concentrating instead on internal enhancements and bug fixes. Despite plausible official explanations, it was hard to shake the feeling that Apple's burgeoning mobile platform was stealing resources—not to mention the spotlight—from the Mac.

First the availability details: New Macs will come with Lion preinstalled, but everyone else will have to get it from the Mac App Store. That’s right, no discs, no retail boxes of any kind. We do expect them to continue making USB restore drives available to Mac buyers, and there will likely be a way to create one if needed. Developers will get a “preview” version, with customer availability.

Windows migration: With OS X Lion, you can migrate all the information from your old PC to your new Mac. Lion automatically transfers your home directory folders (music, pictures, desktop, documents, and downloads), browser bookmarks, and user settings, including localization, locale, and customized desktop picture. Lion also transfers your contacts, calendars, and email accounts (Outlook and Windows Live Mail) and puts them in the appropriate applications.

Lion's system requirements don't differ much from Snow Leopard's. You still need an Intel-based Mac, though this time it must also be 64-bit. The last 32-bit Intel Mac was discontinued in August of 2007; Apple chose a similar four-year cut-off for dropping PowerPC support, with minimal customer backlash. Time marches on. Lion, priced at a mere $29 (the same as its "no new features" predecessor), available exclusively through the Mac App Store. It's an audacious move, yes, but not unexpected.

About This Mac: System Profiler sports a new, streamlined look that gives you key information about your Mac. Get a quick, at-a-glance view of the hardware model and serial number, installed memory, display information, and the types and sizes of files you have stored on your drive.

Copa América - Suarez hails squad unity

Uruguay's long-time cohesion and squad harmony has helped them overcome a poor start to the Copa America and reach the final, according to striker Luis Suarez.

Suarez has scored three goals in five matches including both in Uruguay's 2-0 semi-final win over Peru in La Plata.

Uruguay will play the winners of Wednesday's semi-final between Paraguay and Venezuela in Mendoza in Sunday's final at the Monumental in Buenos Aires.

"The group's mentality is the same as it was before and during the World Cup," said Suarez, who helped Uruguay finish fourth in last year's finals in South Africa.

"This is a very even Copa America, we didn't start well and there's little time between matches (to correct things)," the Liverpool striker said.

With 12 teams divided into three groups, there are less days between matches at the Copa America than the World Cup finals and regional heavyweights, hosts Argentina and holders Brazil who are in the early stages of team building, were eliminated in the quarter-finals.

Uruguay finished second in their group after 1-1 draws with Peru and Chile and a 1-0 win over Mexico and they eliminated old rivals Argentina on penalties in their quarter-final.

Suarez and Diego Forlan have had to alter their roles as Uruguay's strike force when Edinson Cavani, the third member of their World Cup attacking trident, was injured in their second match against Chile.

"With Edi's absence, the coach sent me to play more as a number nine but I'm comfortable with that," Suarez said.

Forlan has failed to find the net in the tournament but Suarez said that was not critical given his team mate's importance to the team in many other aspects.

"It doesn't matter who scores the goals," Suarez said.

The striker's comments demonstrate the team's ethic which can be attributed to coach Oscar Tabarez taking the reins for the second time in 2006.

The small country's remarkable achievements in the first half of the 20th century when they won two Olympic and two World Cup titles between 1924 and 1950 had become a millstone they carried during decades of little success despite producing excellent players.

But they have progressed under Tabarez, who has overseen a revolution in their organisation from the junior ranks up, and victory in Sunday's final will give them a record 15th title, moving ahead of rivals Argentina who they are currently tied with.

A Sunday triumph will also be their third Copa America since 1987, when the tournament was revamped, and first since they hosted the tournament in 1995.

"Uruguay are not satisfied with what they did in the past, this is the result of a process since 2006," Suarez said.

Paraguay advances to Copa America final

Paraguay advanced to the Copa America final against Uruguay by beating Venezuela in a penalty shootout following a goalless draw.

Paraguay won the shootout 5-3 last night, the only miss coming when Justo Villar stopped Franklin Lucena's shot. Dario Veron netted the final spot kick to set up Sunday's final against Uruguay, which beat Peru 2-0 in the other semifinal on Tuesday.
Venezuela, known more for its baseball, came up just short of reaching the final of the South American competition for the first time.

Paraguay advances to its first Copa America final since 1979 despite not having won any of its five matches so far. It eliminated Brazil in another penalty shootout in the quarterfinals.

After the shootout, a brawl between the teams started as Paraguay celebrated, prompting police to intervene. That came after a game in which Paraguay had its coach and assistant coach expelled from the sideline for arguing decisions.

Nestor Ortigoza, Lucas Barrios, Cristian Riveros and Osvaldo Martinez also netted for Paraguay in the shootout. Giancarlo Maldonado, Jose Rey and Nicolas Fedor scored for Venezuela, but Lucena taking his team's third kick saw his low shot to the bottom left corner comfortably held by Villar.

After a lackluster 90 minutes, Venezuela twice hit the post in extra time and had some good scoring opportunities. Maldonado fired a cross shot that was deflected by Fedor onto the post in the 93rd minute.

A couple of minutes later, Juan Arango's long-range free kick struck Villar's far post and the Paraguay defense just barely cleared the rebound. Fedor came close again in the 96th, but his shot from close range was saved by Villar. Venezuela was able to pressure even more after Jonathan Santana was sent off in the 102nd minute for receiving a second yellow card.

Villar had to make another stop on a shot by Salomon Rondon from near the penalty spot, and Gabriel Chichero shot wide from the top of the area in the 114th.
Venezuela had made it through to the Copa America semifinals for the first time in its history by beating Chile 2-1 in the quarters.

With the 45,000-capacity Malvinas Argentinas stadium less than half-full on a cold night, those fans on hand saw a game of few scoring opportunities before Venezuela's extra time flourish.

The most significant chance in regulation time came in the 42nd, when Venezuela's Alejandro Moreno headed onto the crossbar. On the rebound, Rondon's close-range shot required Villar to make a difficult save.

Paraguay coach Gerardo Martino was ejected early in extra time for complaining and got into a verbal altercation with his Venezuelan counterpart, Cesar Farias, who signaled with his hands for the Paraguay coach to leave.

Paraguay was again without striker Roque Santa Cruz, who had already missed the quarterfinal against Brazil because of a muscle injury in his right leg. The powerful striker came on as a substitute in the 73rd, but only lasted seven minutes before having to go off.

Santa Cruz earlier in the tournament became Paraguay's all-time leading scorer with 25 goals, along with Jose Cardozo.

Last night's stalemate was a contrast to the group-stage clash between the teams, which was a thrilling 3-3 draw after Venezuela had trailed 3-1 in the 89th minute.

Luis Suarez brace sends Uruguay into Copa final

Copa America 2011 Semi-Final:Luis Suarez struck twice in three minutes as Uruguay beat Peru 2-0 in an enthralling encounter on Tuesday to reach the Copa America final and remain on course for a record 15th title.

Uruguay finally lives up to their class in the Copa America 2011 Semi-Final clash. Uruguay, fourth at last year's World Cup, go into the final at the Monumental in Buenos Aires against either Paraguay or Venezuela who clash in Wednesday's semifinal in Mendoza.

Uruguay went ahead eight minutes into the second half when Diego Forlan, the 2010 World Cup's best player, shot left-footed from outside the box forcing Raul Fernandez into a diving save and the ever alert Suarez nipped in to net the rebound from a tight angle on the right.

Suarez scored again three minutes later when Alvaro Pereira passed between two defenders from the left and the striker beat the offside trap, rounded Fernandez on the edge of the box and steered the ball gently home.

Peru captain Juan Vargas was then sent off in the 69th minute for elbowing Uruguay defender Sebastian Coates in the face.

"Today was a match in which we had to go out and attack, to play, and luckily it worked out well," Suarez, comparing it with a more defensive performance against hosts Argentina in Uruguay's quarterfinal win on penalties, said in a televised interview.

"I think that to play the final in Argentina is great. Now we have to enjoy (the moment), the important thing is we reached the final which was our objective."

David Cameron denies trying to stop phone hacking probe

LONDON : Prime Minister David Cameron emphatically denied claims that his staff tried to stop an inquiry into phone hacking at the News of the World and defended his decision to hire one of the tabloid's editors as his communications chief. He had rejected an inquiry into allegations of phone hacking at Rupert Murdoch's UK newspapers.

The unusual step by Gus O'Donnell, head of the Civil Service and the Cabinet Office, which advises the government, was a measure of the political heat generated by the scandal in Britain, whose current prime minister David Cameron has said politicians of all parties had been under Murdoch's spell.

The seven-page document revealed O'Donnell had advised Brown against holding an inquiry but not blocked any probe. In a raucous emergency session Wednesday in Parliament, Cameron did admit that both the ruling Conservatives and the opposition Labour parties had failed to pursue key developments in the hacking case and had actively courted media baron Rupert Murdoch.

Police are also probing whether news media breached privacy laws. David Cameron cut short his Africa trip and the House of Commons delayed its summer break to debate issues engulfing both Britain's political and media elite and Murdoch's global communications empire, News Corp.

Murdoch owned the troubled News of the World, where the phone hacking claims first emerged in 2005, when the royal household alerted police that the tabloid may have learned about Prince William's knee injury by illegally intercepting phone messages.

Cameron's former communications chief Andy Coulson -- a former editor at the tabloid is among 10 people who have been arrested in the scandal. One has been cleared. Lawmakers wanted to know why Cameron insisted on hiring Coulson despite warnings and how much the prime minister knew about the phone hacking investigation. There have been allegations that some people on Cameron's staff may have met with police to pressure them to drop the investigation.

"To risk any perception that No 10 (Downing Street) was seeking to influence a sensitive police investigation in any way would have been completely wrong," he said.

Cameron did, however, meet with News Corp. executives more than two dozen times from May 2010 to this month -- meetings that were criticized in Parliament by Labour leader Ed Miliband, who said Cameron had made a "catastrophic error of judgment" in hiring Coulson.

Coulson was an editor at the News of the World when royal reporter Clive Goodman and private investigator Glenn Mulcaire were arrested and jailed in 2007 for phone hacking. The original police inquiry into phone hacking was dropped, Coulson quit the paper and Cameron -- then opposition leader -- hired him.

As China looms, Hillary Clinton tells India 'It's time to lead'

CHENNAI, India (Reuters) – U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told India on Wednesday “it’s time to lead”, urging New Delhi to take a stronger role across Asia where China is flexing its muscles, and to bolster support for struggling neighbours Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Clinton chose the Anna Centenary library, south Asia’s largest public library constructed by the erstwhile DMK government, to reach out to her predominantly south Indian audience. The 40-minute address focused on India’s cultural and historical role in the Asia-Pacific region and its post-reforms growth, which in her own words, made it a natural choice to assume a greater role in regional affairs.

Clinton, delivering a speech in the southern port city of Chennai, said New Delhi should exercise political influence to match its economic clout — both of which Washington sees as potential counterweights to Beijing.

“This is not a time when any of us can afford to look inward at the expense of looking outward. This is a time to seize the opportunities of the 21st century and it is a time to lead.”

U.S. officials billed Clinton’s speech as a major address to outline Washington’s vision for the U.S.-India collaboration in the coming century, a partnership it hopes will both stabilise Asia and hedge China’s growing dominance.

“We are betting that India’s pluralistic democracy will produce results for your citizens and inspire others to follow a similar path of openness and tolerance,” she said.

“We think that America and India share a fundamentally similar vision for the future of this region.”

U.S. President Barack Obama, on a visit to India last November, publicly backed New Delhi’s bid for a permanent seat on the U.N. Security Council and U.S. officials say they now want the world’s largest democracy to become a more visible partner in facing global challenges.

Clinton urged India to start in its immediate neighbourhood by using its influence with Myanmar’s rulers to release political prisoners and engage with pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, promote political progress in Sri Lanka and Nepal and improve ties with impoverished neighbour Bangladesh.

Clinton listed areas where India and the United States cooperate, including clean-energy technologies, cyber-security and addressing concerns over Iran’s nuclear programme.

She said India could do more to build a leadership role in the broader Asia-Pacific region, pushing New Delhi to translate its “Look East” policy into a stronger stance on everything from maritime security to human rights — areas where Washington has at times had frictions with China.

“We encourage you not just to look east, but continue to engage and act east as well,” she said.

U.S. officials are careful not to describe deepening U.S. ties with India as focussed on countering China, and Clinton emphasized that New Delhi and Washington could still have “a strong, constructive” relationship with Beijing. But, she added, “this will not always be easy”, and said India, China and the United States would have to coordinate their efforts as they all seek to build Asia’s future.

Shankar's concert @ Internet

After years of consolidating his position as a music composer in Bollywood, 'Breathless...' singer Shankar Mahadevan is now reaching out to a new section of the audience. The artiste will perform his popular numbers from forthcoming Bollywood films and independent albums at a concert on July 19. The venue? The Internet.

"What is better than everyone all over the world being able to watch a concert together?" says Mahadevan, visibly excited about tapping into a new fan base, which is bigger than any other he has performed for. "It is amazing to see the audience suddenly grow exponentially. I will perform in a studio with a live band and the platform is interesting for me, as I've never done this before."

Mahadevan, however, will not be the only artiste who will utilise this platform. The organisers plan to have more webcerts of this kind. And Mahadevan too is game. "I would love to plan more webcerts. I want to do many more like this. This is just the beginning," he adds.

The line-up includes tracks from Zoya Akhtar's recently released Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Rock On!! (2008), Karthik Calling Karthik (2010) and Taare Zameen Par (2007) among others. Nokia Smartnights WebCert in association with www.artistaloud.com has organised Mahadevan's debut digital live performance, which will be streamed on July 19 at 5 pm. Concert on your phone

The 40-minute long concert will not be limited to the Internet. For users of Nokia smartphones, an OVI application will allow them to access the concert on their phones while on the move. Accepting that the Internet speeds in India do not help the cause of online concerts, Mahadevan adds, "As it gets better, these concepts will get more and more popular." This is the second season of the webcert, as it was sanctioned following the reported success of the first.

Liverpool Midfield Clear-Out: Five Linked With Anfield Exit

The Liverpool manager has invested £47m this summer in three midfielders – Stewart Downing, Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam. However, with the club’s owner, John W Henry, tweeting that he expects Alberto Aquilani, who spent last season on loan at Juventus, to stay on Merseyside, Dalglish’s room for manoeuvre may be narrowing.

Milan Jovanovic, his most obvious misfit and the last and worst signing made by Rafael Benítez, is close to the exit door. The Serb has had offers from both Anderlecht and Lille, although he said his wife would prefer Brussels to northern France.

Like Maxi Rodríguez and Joe Cole, he was a free transfer on high wages. The three of them, all touted for moves away from Merseyside, are each reportedly on around £100,000 a week.

Roberto confirms Aguero bid

ROBERTO MANCINI expects Manchester City to make a bid for Sergio Aguero this week

The £45million-rated Atletico Madrid striker, 23, is seen as the ideal replacement for Carlos Tevez.

Tevez looks certain to leave for Corinthians this summer with City in negotiations with the Brazilian side.

Asked if they would make an offer for Aguero, City boss Mancini said: "Maybe in the next few days.

"I have not spoken to anyone about it but probably. I think so."

Mancini, who is on a pre-season tour in Canada with City, admits he is unsure how close Tevez is to leaving.

He added: "I slept last night and I had a game to prepare for today so I don't know any more.

"The clubs are talking. They only have one number and it does not work at the moment."

City and England midfielder Gareth Barry would welcome the signing of Aguero.

He said: "Aguero is a very exciting player from what I have seen on TV.

"He is a class act. Names like that will excite fans and the players."

Barry revealed Tevez's exit has been discussed among his team-mates during the tour.

He added: "There has obviously been the odd chat about Carlos.

"He has made it clear he is ready to leave and the players will respect his decision.

"It is down to the club to decide what fee they want for Carlos.

"We would be sad to lose him because he is a class player who has worked really hard for the club.

"If you believe what you read, then yes, he has played his last game. But he has been great for Manchester City.

"He has helped the club win its first trophy and he has always given 100 per cent. We are grateful for that."

City beat Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1 in a friendly last night with young striker John Guidetti on the scoresheet.

Barry added: "John is young. He is a good player and I think he can have a good future at Manchester City.

"He is strong. He is a typical English striker, even though he is Swedish. He has a good technique. He wants to improve.

"He will have time here. It is important that he continues to work well and continues to improve.

"He scored a good goal but when you are a young player, you need to improve every day. This year is important. He has a chance.

100th India versus England Test at LORD’S

100th India versus England Test at LORD’S

India’s first test against England at Lord’s is still more than a couple of weeks away, but the buzz for the series has been catching every cricket fan’s attention. And why not, the test match is going to be quite a historic one as it will be the 2,000th Test match played, as well as the 100th Test between England and India.

Add to that, when Sachin Tendulkar is just one ton away 100 international centuries, the excitement just gets bigger. He would not mind marking the occasion by becoming the first cricketer to reach the milestone. The Test match, between Pakistan and New Zealand in November 1984, saw a century in each innings by Javed Miandad.

He might be the highest number of century-maker in Test cricket, but he still craves for that elusive one at the Mecca of Cricket, Lord’s.

“This (Lord’s) is the ground all the players dream of getting hundred, I am no different I would want to get one. May be three hundreds in all the Tests here will be good,” Tendulkar told reporters in London.

All in all, though there are a lot of things being said around as the series get closer, the Indian team which has been dominating world cricket for quite some time now, will be giving some hard time to English team for sure, who has a pretty decent record against the Indians at home.

The kind of extravaganza planned for this momentous occasion is yet to be determined. However, given the contest alone, that should be a crowd puller in itself. Undoubtedly, there will be more than one reason to line up for this Test, which is supposedly the 2000th international Test.

India outplayed, warm-up game against Somerset ends in draw

TAUNTON: India were left bruised and battered as they were all out for a mere 224 in their first innings and then allowed Somerset to score at a rollicking pace before the three-day warm-up game ended in an expected tame draw on the final day on Sunday.

The world number one side, who rested a few top players including captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the only tour game, were outplayed by Somerset for most part of the day except for the brief period when Suresh Raina launched a counter-attack to score a dazzling unbeaten 103.

India were completely outplayed by the English county side in the first two days also. They go into the first Test of the four-match series starting on July 21 after being at the receiving end of a county side in the tour game.

After shooting India out for 224 in the morning session, Somerset scored at an amazing 6.34 runs per over to declare their second innings at 260 for two from just 41 overs at the tea break itself, leaving India an impossible victory target of 462.

England captain Andrew Strauss, who was featuring in the practice game as a guest player for Somerset, top-scored with an unbeaten 109 while Peter Trego also remained not out with a 57-ball blitzkrieg of 85 which was studded with seven fours and sixes apiece.

In their second innings, India were 69 for no loss before rain brought the proceedings to a close. Abhinav Mukund and Gautam Gambhir, who led the visiting side in the absence of Dhoni, were on 33 and 36 respectively when the two sides decided to end the game.

It was struggle again for the Indian bowlers on the final day with Strauss and Trego sending them for a leatherhunt by raining fours and sixes in Somerset's second innings.

Strauss followed up his 78 of the first innings with an unconquered 109 in the second essay. Somerset compiled 249 runs at the cost of two wickets from 36 overs in the post-lunch session.

The sheen off Strauss innings' was off though since Zaheer Khan did not come out on the field in the second innings of the hosts. But the rest of the Indian bowling was as ineffective as it was in the first innings.

Also missing from the field was Sachin Tendulkar who chose to stay indoors during England's second innings.

The word from the dressing room though was that there is nothing wrong with the two cricketers.

Somerset, who led India by 201 runs on the first innings, were rapidly into their stride as Strauss and his opening partner Arul Suppiah had their second century stand of the match. The duo stitched 129 runs for the unbroken third wicket.

Leg-spinner Amit Mishra then managed two wickets off successive balls when Suppiah (45) and Hildreth (0) fell to catches in the close-in cordon but he was made to pay for irking the hosts.

Peter Trego, the new man in, launched into Mishra with such ferocity that the leg-spinner conceded 61 runs from a mere three overs at one stage.

Trego, in Mishra's 12th over, reaped 28 runs, hitting a four and then the next four balls for sixes before playing the last ball with a dead bat.

Mishra switched ends, even tried to bowl wides, but Trego was unstoppable.

In the morning session, Suresh Raina's counter-attacking unbeaten 103 single-handedly took India to 224 all out in their first innings.

The left-hander smashed an unbeaten 103 from just 112 balls with the help of 14 boundaries and five sixes as India conceded a 201-run lead after Somerset had posted 425 for three declared in their first innings.

The hosts, as expected, did not enforce the follow on and were 11 for no loss at lunch break. They have now taken an overall lead of 202 runs.

The visitors, resuming at 138 for eight, lost overnight batsman S Sreesanth (1) straightaway, giving left-arm paceman Charl Willoughby his sixth wicket of the innings.

This was the trigger Raina needed to throw caution to winds as he took 18 runs from Alfonso Thomas' next over from the other end - a four, followed by a six over midwicket and two more boundaries to complete the over.

He soon was past his half century from 73 balls with nine fours and a six.

Raina then turned his attention of Willoughby and struck him for three sixes, each bigger than the previous ones as he took his chance for a three-figure knock.

The last wicket stand with Munaf Patel thus prospered before Raina drove one past a misfielding mid-off to reach his century.

Munaf was out thereafter, leg before to part-time leg spin of Max Waller, a decision the tall medium-pacer was not happy with at all.

The last wicket stand added 84 runs with overall 86 runs scored this morning out of which Raina's share was 73.

Somerset did not enforce the follow on in a bid to give another outing in the middle to England captain Strauss.
